Attractions

Kerrville Texas is located about 2 hours west of Austin and about 1 hour Northwest of San Antonio. With a population of over 20,000 it is one of the bigger towns in the Texas Hill Country. It’s also a somewhat overlooked tourist destination that has a lot to offer for a weekend getaway.  Kerrville is a short drive (25 miles or so) to Fredericksburg , Luckenbach and Bandara. Rooms are frequently more affordable that it’s more famous neighboring Hill Country Towns. The Upper Guadalupe River runs through the heart of the city and features a small lake on the North side of town, Nimitz Lake.

The Museum of Western Art
http://museumofwesternart.com/

Probably the most impressive Museum in the Texas Hill County outside of Austin, San Antonio, and Marfa. Everything about the place is outstanding. The collection features high quality wester art and artifacts. The building itself is also very nice with vaulted brick ceilings that were made on site. During our visit we also were able to chat with the artist on site that is also involved with the museum.  It’s a must see for a visit to Kerrville. If you are a museum lover, it’s a good enough reason for a trip to Kerrville for the days or the weekend.

Cailloux Theatre

https://caillouxtheater.com/

A nice theater that features Plays, a Symphony, and other music performances located in the heart of the downtown district. There don’t have shows every weekend, so it’s a good idea to check their website to find a good weekend to visit Kerrville and take in a show.

Events

The big Event of the year in Kerrville is the Kerrville folk festival. It runs for 18 days and nights at the Quite Valley Ranch located 9 miles south of the downtown area. They offer camping, day, weekend, and a full pass for the entire 18 days. Beyond the camping and music, this hill country music festival also features  Yoga and music lessons for songwriting, guitar, and you can sharpen up your harmonica skills.

Some of the other cool events include a USTA tennis tournament in May, A large mountain bike festival and Triathlons in September, Shakespeare in the park, and frequent Concerts in the Park.

Nightlife

Many of the hotels and motels are located a few miles from the downtown district, and there are no Ubers in Kerrville, so plan accordingly.  In our first visit we made a stop at Azul’s lounge downtown, it’s nice with live music on the weekends and caught a sunset at Pier 27. Our final night they had a band at our hotel  bar, “Inn Pub” that was packed with locals that were all very friendly.
